Body Basement

Hello cyber world,

Good morning/afternoon/evening/night to you.

This is my first blog post in the 26 years that I have been around on planet earth. I was going to write an introduction as to how my musical taste has developed over the years so that you would know whether or not my music blog entries are worth your time. Unfortunately, it would take too long and there just wouldn't be enough space for me to list all the influential artists I've come across. Instead, as a guide I present my not-so-humble views on music below and include a tune from one of my favourite artists from 2008 as well my own.

The Music in Sound

I find the notion of music quite intriguing for something that is so simple. Music, that which is merely a collection of interconnected and sometimes disjointed sounds, can have such power and grip over countless minds. Almost everyone in the world will claim that they have the best taste in music and will be more than willing to advocate which artists they revere and why. Such advocacy can become even more assertive when it comes to artists they dislike. Indeed, I am guilty for all of the above. Yet, sometimes, when I think about it, reverence and worship of some artists and the detest of others can at times seem, well... a little pathetic. I guess our innate competitiveness to claim our stake as the person with the greatest taste who creates the best mix-tapes and music blogs is something which is ingrained in our little heads and can't be helped. It is plainly Darwinian, for two reasons. First, I believe we often subconsciously search for a mate who has a similar taste or perhaps an even more refined taste in music than our own which is why it is in our interests to defend our musical taste and put it in the best light possible. Second, all of us are in search of a hero or heroine (even if you are Axl Rose) or at least someone you can idolise. My point is this, music is fucking great. It makes all of us feel real and human. While pimply teenaged kids may glorify certain artists way beyond what they deserve, which is annoying, fuck it I say, for it just means to me that I will always have the better taste than MTV.

On that note, I leave you with a great song from Sally Shapiro called "He keeps me alive" and one from my own band.
